Vegan Culinary Instructor (Seasonal May – Oct)
Our mission is simple: to create more vegans! We’re looking not just for a master chef, but for a master teacher — someone who is both dedicated to the vegan lifestyle and passionate about teaching. To that end, we seek an individual who can cook and create meals from the simple to the sublime, and who can present them with flair and enthusiasm to audiences ranging from individual families (the “veg curious”), food festival attendees, to 800 or more at our annual events.
Duties include:
- Developing and instructing vegan cooking classes.
- Planning and executing food for two large-scale events.
- Representing sanctuary at regional fairs, festivals, vegan events, and in media.
- Managing revolving team of volunteers.
- Directing and maintaining on-site organic gardens.
- Maintaining sanctuary kitchen, inventory, and equipment.
- Maintaining Department of Health standards and certification.
- Building curriculum in conjunction with Program Director for use in summer children’s camp; conducting classes with camp attendees in garden and kitchen.
- Providing staff lunches once a week
Required:
- Degree or certificate from a recognized culinary school
- 2 to 3 years experience in a culinary educational institution or equivalent experience as a freelance culinary instructor
- 1 to 2 years experience catering events
- Exceptional oral and written communication skills
- Passion for veganism and in-depth knowledge of the health benefits of a vegan diet
- Interest in working with staff to create a varied, year-round program of both on and off-site offerings
- Interest in partnering with local and Manhattan-based veg restaurants
- Ability to work well with others in a team environment
- Ability to work evenings and weekends
- Strong professional and personal references (please provide 3 of each)
This position runs from May 1 through October 2012, with the possibility of extension. Pay is $600-$650 a week with a possibility of on-site housing. Health insurance available after 45 days.
ANIMAL CARE INTERN
Are you currently training to care for animals? Are you looking to take part in a unique internship where you will get experience with a wide variety of farm animals?
CAS is seeking an intern to work with our Animal Care Director, Ciara Fiack, for the spring 2012 semester. As the Animal Care Intern, you will be responsible for assisting Ciara as she completes her daily animal health checks, implements animal health care regimens, monitors the well-being of the animals, medically treats critical care animals, manages the animals’ diets, and partners with local veterinarians.
Ideal applicant should:
- Be a current student in: animal science, pre-vet program, veterinary technician training, or related field
- Feel comfortable working closely with farm animals including: cows, goats, pigs, chickens, horses, sheep, geese, and rabbits
- Have a basic knowledge of healthcare related to farm animals
- Be physically capable of working on a farm with large animals
As an intern, you must be able to dedicate at least 10 hours a week to your CAS internship. This is an UNPAID position, but students can receive credit from their academic institution. SOCIAL MEDIA INTERN
Are you passionate about fighting animal cruelty and protecting the planet? Join our Outreach & Communications team!
Through tours, speaking engagements, a children’s summer camp, and vegan cooking program, CAS educates the public about the sentience and suffering of farm animals, and the devastating impacts of institutionalized cruelty on animals, people, and the planet we share. CAS is seeking an intern to help with photography and video, and other social media projects.
Ideally, applicants should:
- Have superb and demonstrable social media skills, with particular expertise in Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, YouTube, and blogging
- Have or be working toward a degree in marketing, public relations, communications or a related field
- Have good photography, video, and video editing skills
- Be opposed to animal cruelty in all forms
- Have basic knowledge about the impacts of factory farming and institutionalized cruelty on animals, people, and the planet
- Be committed to a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle
- Be available approximately 10 hours a week for a minimum of one semester, and have access to a car for travel to and from CAS
- Be able to work independently and autonomously
This is an UNPAID position, but students can receive credit required by their academic institution. The position will be filled as soon as possible, and the duration is negotiable.
