HUMANE EDUCATION SPECIALIST + TOURS ASSISTANT

Catskill Animal Sanctuary is a leading education farmed animal sanctuary. Sanctuary visitors receive critical education on the plight of farmed animals and the vital importance of vegan living for the health of farmed animals, humans, and the planet we all share. This 20 hour per week position allows a passionate animal rights advocate to deepen their experience working with farmed animals and highlighting the unique perspectives of farmed animals as individuals. The Humane Education Specialist role provides a chance to raise your voice and make a difference in the lives of both humans and nonhuman rescued animals and to advance critical social change for farmed animals. 

RESPONSIBILITIES, JOB SPECIFICATIONS, QUALIFICATIONS

Responsibilities:

    • Conduct 90-minute public tours on both Saturday and Sunday, as well as one weekday per week. 
    • Confidently relate to all 11 species of farmed animals living at Catskill Animal Sanctuary
    • Facilitate visitor engagement with the varied educational resources that Catskill Animal Sanctuary offers. 
    • Greet arriving visitors. 
    • Complete a comprehensive training program which includes both on-site activities and independent study. 
    • Assist the Tour Programs Manager with tours related to Tours Program maintenance
    • Attend monthly tours meetings, which may be scheduled on weekends or weekday evenings. 

Job Specifications: 

    • 20 hours per week, on-site
    • Saturdays and Sundays
    • Outdoors, in a wide range of weather conditions 
    • Position requires regular weekend and some holiday hours 
    • $15/hr
    • Eligible for 2.5 PTO days after 90 days employment

Qualifications: 

  • Experience working as a humane educator, tour guide, or regularly presenting to public audiences is strongly preferred
  • Experience working with large animals is desirable but not required
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to adapt to diverse audiences
  • Knowledgeable about farmed animal issues and/or vegan living 
  • Commitment to Catskill Animal Sanctuary’s mission and living a vegan lifestyle 
  • Mindful of body language – human and animal
  • Able to efficiently learn and master new material
