Mario

Berkshire Garrow (Pig)
Birthdate: est. 5/1/2014
Mario was once described by his former farmer as “the sweetest pig” he’d ever met, and he continues to live up to that reputation every day. He’s very appreciative of belly rubs and cheek scratches! As one of the most easygoing pigs at Catskill Animal Sanctuary, Mario has a way of putting everyone around him at ease. Now a senior who moves a little slower, he enjoys his peaceful routine and thrives thanks to the steady support of sponsors who help keep his golden years full of dignity and love.

Mario arrived at CAS in December 2014, having narrowly escaped slaughter as a young pig. He was rescued from former pig farmer Bob Comis, whose personal transformation from raising pigs for slaughter to becoming a vegan animal advocate was documented in the film The Last Pig. After stepping away from farming, Bob sought to ensure that the pigs who remained, including Mario and his sister Audrey, were placed in safe, lifelong homes.
