ASSISTANT ANIMAL HEALTHCARE MANAGER

Animal Healthcare team members at Catskill Animal Sanctuary provide all the fundamental care required to ensure the physical and emotional health of our animals.

As an assistant healthcare manager, your responsibilities will include providing medications and treatments under the supervision of the Healthcare Manager, training of junior-level staff, special projects and independent execution of daily tasks.

You will also develop deep concentrations in farm animal species and lead in the enrichment and care of those animals.

This position is fast-paced and physically demanding.

*The responsibilities for this position may include, but are not limited to: Animal Healthcare

Responsible for daily healthcare tasks when the Healthcare Manager is not present.

This includes:

Preparing medications for animal feed runs to be administered by Animal Care staff

Delivering daily medications as described on the weekly med sheet

Carrying out additional healthcare tasks such as deworming, fecal parasite counts, supportive care for critical animals and enrichment training as determined with the Healthcare Manager

Assessing calls from Animal Care staff to determine if an animal needs urgent help or if it can wait until the Healthcare Manager is on site next

Contacting the appropriate vet in case of an emergency and performing basic triage until a professional can arrive to assist (only expected after being given thorough training)

Assisting with the diagnosis and treatment plan design for individual animals.

Carrying out health maintenance tasks as scheduled such as hoof trims, vaccinations, beak trims, spur trims, checking weights, performing health checks, etc.

Assist with maintaining and updating the CAS Animal Database

Updating the weekly med sheet to include appropriate changes (usually indicated on previous week’s sheet)

Assisting with vet/farrier visits or carrying them out solo if the HC Manager cannot be there

Taking a leadership role in projects associated to the daily care of animals and the organization’s administration and strategic plan

Administration

Accurate and up-to-date data entry and record keeping of animal health, moves, treatments, concerns and enrichment

Taking stock of current inventory, assessing what needs to be ordered based on current level of use, and ordering from appropriate suppliers.

Participating in staff and management meetings as needed

Help maintain medical equipment

Requirements:

Extensive farmed animal experience (e.g. goats, cows, chickens, sheep, horses, etc.)

Experience providing direct animal healthcare treatment

Experience dealing with animal emergency situations

A passion for the CAS mission and the desire to be part of a team dedicated to building best practices across the entire organization

The emotional maturity to model a friendly, positive tone with staff, volunteers, visitors and other professionals at all times–in other words, to live our “lead with love” ethos.

Strong organizational skills with a proven ability to manage multiple priorities and projects in fast-paced work environment

Excellent time management and communication skills

Ability to work well with a variety of staff and external partners in accordance with our Code of Conduct

Ability to perform necessary duties in enclosed & open environments in all weather conditions through the year

Valid driver’s license with clean driving record required

Ability to lift 50 – 75 lbs repeatedly and hold animals for an extended period of time

Willingness to work weekends, evenings and holidays

This is a full-time position.

Starting salary is $19-20/hour depending on experience.

Will have a 90-day probationary period.

Candidates must be available to be added to the schedule and commute to work within four weeks of offer.

Must be available for a paid working interview of up to two days onsite within 2 weeks of phone interview.
