PROGRAMS + RETAIL ASSISTANT

REQUIREMENTS

The Programs and Retail Assistant position is an integral employee on the Humane Education Programming Team. Their primary responsibilities are to engage with the visiting public at our Welcome Hut, oversee all retail sales and inventory management and support humane education activities both virtually and in person.

Primary Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Welcome Hut Management (approximately 16 hours/week)

  • Greeting all visitors who arrive to take tours; checking them in; reviewing safety protocols; etc;
  • Introducing the public to our family of underfoots (primarily sheep with some goats and one potbelly pig in 2022, but always subject to change); explaining basic safety with each species to promote meaningful interactions from the start of their visit;
  • Bringing visitors to meet their tour guides and letting guides know when they can start;
  • Ring out retail sales; apply membership discount when applicable;
  • Ask who they met on tours and point them to the corresponding merchandise; (comfortable upselling)
  • Foster meaningful relationships with our human visitors;
  • Maintain meaningful relationships with Sanctuary Members/Sponsors;
  • Share customer feedback with the HE Programming Manager;
  • Maintain cleanliness of facilities including store shelving, floors, and restroom trailers;
  • Opening and closing the register on Saturdays/Sundays before and after public tours;

Merchandise Management (approximately 8 hours/week)

  • Restock merchandise on an ongoing basis in the Hut, including food;
  • Ensure accurate signage and eye-catching displays;
  • Learn budgeting/reordering procedures for reordering stock as it starts to run low;
  • Note what sells best and make suggestions for new items;
  • Monitor data regarding tours and the implications on merchandise;
  • Fulfill and ship online orders in a timely manner
  • Work with Business and Finance manager on a quarterly basis to review budget and income;

Humane Education Support (approximately 16 hours/week)

  • Complete Humane Educator training (including with Humane Educational Programming Manager and Education Manager; and bond with our animal residents;
  • Complete research for educational projects in development stages
  • Scheduling tours and programs with Google Calendar;
  • Sending invoices and verifying payment ahead of tours;
  • Managing the tourstaff email account;
  • Managing the info email account;
  • Update the Resident Master List with new arrivals, dates, breed information, back stories, photos, links etc;
  • Background research for Virtual Sanctuary episodes, educational materials, etc;
  • Programs data collection and support;
  • Technology support during Virtual Sanctuary, Virtual Field Trips, etc;
  • General voicemail management;

Deputy Director Support/Office Support (as needed)

  • Learn about SEO optimization plug-in;
  • Research a wide variety of topics related to sanctuary needs;
  • Maintain office supplies subscriptions and ordering;
  • Ensure that office cleaning company is attending as scheduled;
  • Other projects as assigned.

Schedule:

Public Tour Season (April through December):

  • Five days on site; some ability to work from home depending on sanctuary needs
  • Must be onsite on Saturdays & Sundays (9-5:30, exceptions for inclement weather, special events, etc.)
  • Other three days TBD based on sanctuary needs and applicant availability

Off-Season (January-March):

  • Onsite but days flexible based on sanctuary needs.
  • some ability to work from home depending on sanctuary needs

The ideal candidate possesses:

  • A strong commitment to a vegan lifestyle;
  • A love for and comfort level with animals of all species;
  • Prior experience in teaching/education and a strong commitment to lifelong learning;
  • The ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment;
  • An outgoing personality and oral communication skills;
  • The ability to think on their feet and problem-solve;
  • Prior experience in a customer service field and/or retail experience;
  • Experience using current technology to provide educational services;
  • Willingness to pitch in where needed (assisting the Animal Care Team, Communications Team, Development Team, etc.)
  • A commitment to embracing humans from a variety of backgrounds (both members of the public and staff members);
  • A commitment to teamwork;
  • Reliable transportation and punctuality;
  • Accuracy in sales transactions;
  • Proof of Covid Vaccination.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $18.00 per hour
