Product Review: Field Roast’s Vegan Sausages

Product Review: Field Roast’s Vegan Sausages

There’s something utterly irresistible about a great sausage. The combination of that tempting smoky-sweet flavor, dense, chewy texture, and herbs (especially sage!) makes for a top-notch eating experience. Luckily for us, we can get all those great qualities without causing any harm to our animal friends, thanks to Field Roast. In this product review, I’ll tell you a bit about these great vegan sausages, as well as provide some of my favorite tips for using them in the kitchen.

A Variety for Every Taste

At the time of this writing, there are three varieties of Field Roast’s larger sausage links: Smoked Apple and Sage; Italian; and Mexican Chipotle. And for serving with breakfast or brunch, the petite Apple Maple Breakfast Sausages make a perfect, protein-rich side. I’ve tried them all but the Mexican Chipotle, which I haven’t yet been able to find. I’m looking forward to trying it once I finally track it down!

My Favorite: Smoked Apple Sage

My personal favorite is the Smoked Apple and Sage sausage, which is expertly seasoned with sage and hickory flavoring, and made more interesting with dried apples and Yukon Gold potatoes. Yum! This is my go-to sausage for crumbling into a pan of tofu scramble, or slicing and adding to my Slow Cooker White Bean Cassoulet. (And I’m not gonna lie: they taste pretty darn delicious straight from the package, too!)

Spice Up Your Pasta Sauce

If you’re looking for a great add-in to your favorite pasta sauce, try crumbling in some Italian sausages and letting them simmer as the sauce cooks. The red wine, garlic, and fennel in the sausage will take your sauce to the next level! They also taste awesome grilled and served with sauteed peppers and onions. Make these at your next summer cookout, and I suspect even your non-vegan friends will be drooling.

Ingredients and Texture

Because these sausages are based on wheat gluten (also known as seitan), they’re dense, chewy, and not at all soft or squishy. They hold up to the heat of the grill, and don’t lose their great texture when sliced or crumbled. Whichever way you choose to serve them, you really can’t go wrong!
